What to do when you move a cat into a new home

Humans and pets alike may find moving to be one of the most disruptive changes in their lives. Its a big change, especially moving to another part of the world. We see change as a threat; there is a fear of the unknown. We will alter our routines, and our four-legged family members will exactly feel the same. We understand that our pets are creatures of habits, habits or routines, which reaffirms to them that their basic survival needs (food, water and shelter) will be readily available whenever they need them. And as they have established a routine, changing this will have a big effect on them.

Cats may show some strange behaviors when introduced to a new home. Understanding whats normal and whats not, is vital to helping them adjust. As a result of a long trip, they are likely to experience heightened cortisol levels for a couple of days.

To make the process more relaxing for you and your four-legged family member, planning is the key. The aim is to keep them as calm and comfortable as possible. This too will prevent our cats from meowing, being aggressive, and from attempting to escape. Take a peek at some helpful tips to ease the transition of moving to a new home for your kitty.

Give Your Cat Time to Adjust to His New Home

Prior to your arrival at your new home, plan on how you would like your kitty to adapt to her new environment. You have two options: One is to bring your cat with you and let her settle slowly in her new home, or you might want to leave her in a boarding cattery for a few days until your home is ready and cat safe.

If you choose to bring her with you, upon arrival at your new home, place your cat in a safe carrier or keep her in a single room while you unpack. To keep your cat entertained, place her favorite toys in the room. As you will be a busy bee unpacking and arranging your new home, be sure that your cat cant escape.

Provide a litter box, food, and water in this room. Allow your cat time to adjust to her temporary room in your new home and reassure her that she is safe by spending quiet time with her.

In the event that your cat seems nervous about the move, you may decide to confine her to one room for a few days. And slowly let her explore the rest of the rooms. In this way, you will have time to prepare and organize the whole house.

How long does it take a cat or kitten to get used to her new home?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to your kitty. Adapting to a new home can take days, weeks, or even months; it depends on your cat. Using the tips mentioned here, it can help your fur baby get up to speed within a few weeks of moving in.

These are some of the signs of anxiety a cat or kitten exhibits when introduced to a new environment:

  • Restlessness
  • Hiding
  • Refraining from eating
  • Vocalization
  • Trembling
  • Excessive grooming

If your cat is showing these behaviors, she should calm down within days or weeks.

Help your cat adapt to their new home

  • Keep their previous daily routine.

Try your very best to continue the same timetable you have set for your cat when it comes to feeding, and playing. After hours of unpacking and setting up your new home, relax and spend some time with your fur baby and give her some kisses and cuddles.

  • Retain your cats previous things

Bring her favorite toys, blankets, and bed. There is no doubt that these help to comfort her.

  • In the event of changing your cats diet

It is important to transition your cats new food slowly. We dont want to add more stress to her and besides feeding her new food suddenly can result in an upset stomach.

  • Try natural calming solutions. Pheromones:

These pheromones are magic. It calms and reduces the stress of cats , especially adjusting to their new surroundings. You may find calming pheromones as a spray or wall plugin. Consider getting one of them.

Our best wishes go out to you and your kitty as the family settles in quickly and enjoys your new home.
